BJP meeting to select presidents

Senior leaders of the BJP have been authorised to submit a report on who all can be highlighted as panchayat presidents

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP's state committee meeting scheduled in Kochi on November 13 will decide on panchayat presidents who have to assume charge on November 19.

Sunday's meeting of the core committee comprising state president V. Muraleedharan, former state presidents, four general secretaries and a vice-president, decided to select the candidates for the tops posts in panchayats and municipalities where the party has come up trumps.

Senior leaders of the BJP have been authorised to submit a report on who all can be highlighted as panchayat presidents as well as chairpersons of municipalities. They will be holding talks with elected ward/panchayat/municipality members as well as with local leadership. Muraleedharan told reporters here that the senior leaders will submit their report at the state committee meeting which will also be attended by district presidents and general secretaries.

P. K. Krishnadas has been entrusted with Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kannur, M. T. Ramesh with Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, A. N. Radhakrishnan with Kottayam and Ernakulam, George Kurian with Idukki and Thrissur, Sobha Surendran with Palakkad, K. P. Sreesan with Kozhikode and Malappuram, and K. Surendran with Kasargod and Wayanad, said Muraleedharan.

Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram district BJP president S. Suresh held a meeting of its 35 new corporation councillors, including an independent candidate, here on Sunday. The meeting was out of bounds for the media. The meeting decided to contest the mayoral election. A BJP source said either Dr V. Vijayalekshmi (Edavakkode), who is a retired professor, or M. R. Gopan (Nemom), who won for the third time, would be fielded as the mayoral candidate.
