Mozilla to remove heavyweight themes

Mozilla have plans release a new specific product plan for themes by December 1

Mumbai: Mozilla has revealed plans to remove heavyweight theme support from its web browser under the organisation’s great or dead initiative on Saturday. The announcement comes due to the negative effects of complete themes on Firefox.

After launching lightweight themes back in 2010, Mozilla has been promoting it ever since. A key reason why Mozilla want to refrain from heavy customisations is to gain complete control over the browser. Additionally, not many people are to fond off complete themes and only three complete themes have more than 100,00 users each.

Even though an official deadline has not been announced, Mozilla have plans release a new specific product plan for themes by December 1. It is highly probable that the complete themes will be removed entirely, or only some of the features—changing icons and colours— might be retained in lightweight themes.

Mozilla step to remove the complete theme customisation options might come as a big blow, as users will not be able to modify the browser according to their liking. One way users can still use the themes is by not upgrading Mozilla, or switching to another browser.

The heavyweight customisations on Firefox are something even Google Chrome and other web browsers fail to compete with and removing it is surely going to depressing for a lot of users.
