Major changes made in IIT entrance test

Students who qualify in the NTS-held aptitude test will be eligible to write the JEE

Hyderabad: The Union HRD ministry-appointed experts’ committee has proposed an online aptitude test, held more than once a year by a National Testing Service, instead of the current JEE Main conducted by the CBSE.

Students who qualify in the NTS-held aptitude test will be eligible to write the JEE. Admission to both IITs and NITs will be based on the results in the JEE.

However, these changes will come into effect only from 2017 or 2018. The Centre has decided that JEE Main, with 40 per cent weightage for 12th marks, and JEE Advanced will continue for 2016 as well. Instead of 1.5 lakh students, now two lakh will qualify from JEE Main for JEE Advanced.

The ministry appointed a committee of eminent persons led by IIT Roorkee chairman Prof. Ashok Misra to suggest changes to the IITs and NIT admission system.
