UDF survives in Pathanamthitta district
PATHANAMTHITTA: The UDF survived in Pathanamthitta district while an LDF wave was experienced throughout Kerala in the local body poll. Like in other districts, the SNDP-BJP alliance did not work while the BJP advanced its position in the panchayat wards and municipalities. The SDPI opened its account in three municipal seats in the district.
The UDF could also retain the district panchayat and gain majority in two municipalities. However, the Pandalam and Adoor municipalities have hung councils.
The UDF won 13 seats and LDF 14 in the Adoor municipality while independent candidate G. Prasad will be the decisive factor as the total number of wards is 28 and 15 is the majority number.
In Pandalam, of the 33 seats, the UDF won 11, LDF 15, and the BJP seven seats while the majority required is 17.
In Pathanamthitta and Thiruvalla municipalities, the UDF got 22 seats each while the LDF got eight each. The BJP secured four seats in Thiruvalla municipality.
The SDPI won in one ward each in Pathanamthitta and Thiruvalla municipalities and Pallickal grama panchayat in the district. Four independent candidates won in Thiruvalla municipality.
In grama panchayats, the UDF won 322 seats, LDF 318, BJP 94, and others in 53 out of a total 788 seats. The LDF has an upper hand with 53 seats against the UDF's 49 in the block panchayats.
The BJP and others won two seats each out of a total of 106 seats. In the district panchayat, the UDF scored a clear victory with 11 seats against the five won by the LDF.
In municipalities, the UDF won 68 seats. The LDF secured 45 seats, BJP 11, and others eight in the municipal divisions of the district.
