UDF bucks trend, retains Kochi corporation
KOCHI: Unlike in other districts, the Congress-led UDF could put up a good show in Ernakulam by retaining the prestigious Kochi corporation council and the district panchayat. With 16 seats, the UDF retained the district panchayat which it had wrested from the LDF in 2010. The LDF won 10 and others 1.
However, the UDF’s performance was poor compared to 2010 when it had won 22 seats of the total 26. CPI candidate Sarada Mohan, daughter of former chief minister P.K. Vasudevan Nair, won from Kalady division. LDF-supported independent George Edapparathy won from Kolenchery.
The other LDF candidates elected to the district panchayat are Ayyampilly Bhaskaran from Cherai, P.S. Shaila from Moothakunnam, K. T. Abraham from Varapetty, N. Arun from Valakom, K.N Sugathan from Pampakuda, A.P. Subash from Udayamperoor, Anitha Sheelan from Kumbalangi, Aslaf Parekadan from Edathala and Sheeba Jose from Kadungalloor.
