Prime Minister announces Rs 80,000 crore package for Jammu and Kashmir
‘Delhi will open its treasury for the people of J&K and to rebuild the state’
Srinagar: In a bid to reach out to people of Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday invoked Atal Bihari Vajpayee and announced a Rs 80,000 crore package saying funds would not be a constraint in building a modern, progressive and prosperous state.
Recalling the words of the former prime minister — Kashmiriyat, Jamhooriyat aur Insaniyat (Kashmiri culture, democracy, and humanity), he said, “I will like to follow these three mantras which are the pillars of development of Kashmir”.
“Kashmir has suffered a lot over the years. Its two generations have seen their dreams being crushed. I have come here with a conviction to take Kashmir to its previous glory and I can see that day is not too far,” he said.
Mr. Modi, who was addressing a mega rally at Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium amid unprecedented security arrangements, said that in order to realise the dream of new and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir the Centre has decided to give the package of Rs 80,000 crore.
“This is not end of it. This is the beginning. Delhi will open its treasury for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and to rebuild the state,” he said, evoking tremendous applause from the audience which included many seasonal labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states.
This was Mr Modi’s first visit to the state after the PDP-BJP coalition came to power in March. He also addressed another rally at Chanderkote in Ramban district of Jammu region where he inaugurated the 450MW Baglihar-II hydroelectric project on Chenab.
He said that 1.75 crore people go out of India for their vacations and if even five percent of them come to Kashmir it would have a huge positive impact on tourism in the state.
