LDF wrests Kanhangad, loses dist panchayat

In Kasargod district panchayat, the UDF won eight seats, the LDF seven and the BJP two

KASARGOD: Kasargod has presented a mixed picture for both the fronts. While the LDF wrested the Kanhangad municipality from the UDF, it lost the district panchayat with a slender margin. The UDF and LDF retained Kasargod and Neeleshwaram municipalities, respectively.

In block panchayats, the LDF has won four and the UDF two. Of the 38 grama panchayats, the UDF has 16 in its kitty, closely followed by the LDF with 15 and the BJP four. Two of the panchayats — Muliyar and Enmakaje — have both the fronts winning equal number of seats.

The LDF has won 21 seats in the Kanhangad municipality, the UDF 13, the BJP five and independents four. In Kasargod, the IUML has bagged all 20 seats won by the UDF, followed by the BJP 14 and the LDF one. In Neeleshwaram, the LDF tally is 19 and the UDF 13.

In Kasargod district panchayat, the UDF won eight seats, the LDF seven and the BJP two.

The BJP has bettered its performance compared to the last poll to the local bodies. It bagged one more panchayat this time, taking the number to four. In Kasargod district panchayat, the BJP won in two divisions, whereas it had only one division last time.

Among the major candidates who won to the district panchayat are Dr V. P. P. Musthafa (CPM), M. Narayanan (CPI), K. Sreekanth (BJP district secretary) and E. Padmavathi (CPM). BJP district president P. Suresh Kumar Shetty lost to the UDF candidate in Vorkady division.
