LDF doubles its seats, CN Balakrishnan's daughter wins
Thrissur: The LDF registered a thumping victory in the three-tier panchayats in Thrissur district by getting almost double the seats it got in the local body poll held in 2010.
In the seven municipalities, the party won majority in three and it is the single largest party it two others. The UDF could get majority only in two.
Of the 55 seats in the Thrissur Corporation, the Left parties won 25 with three seats short of gaining majority. The UDF won 21 seats. The BJP increased its tally in the corporation from two seats to six, with former mayor I. P. Paul of the Congress going down to the BJP candidate at Chembukavu division in the heart of the city by 51 votes.
Though the Congress tasted defeat at the political bastion of Co-operation Minister and 'I' group leader C. N. Balakrishnan's Wadakkanchery municipality, his daughter, C. B. Geetha, won with a telling margin of 812 votes in Olari division of the corporation.
The Congress' former deputy mayor, P. V. Sarojini, lost in Pulazhi and the LDF's mayoral candidate, Sheela Viswanathan, finished third at Kannamkulangara losing to BJP candidate.
Former mayor Rajan J. Pallan of the Congress won with a huge margin of 1,201 votes from Pallikkulam in Thrissur town while BJP's mayoral candidate, Sampoorna M. S., won by 391 votes form Thekkinkadu.
In Kodungallur Municipality, the BJP won 16 seats and the UDF four seats while the LDF went on to get majority with 24 seats.
In the 86 grama panchayats, the LDF gained majority in 67 and the UDF in 18. The LDF had won only 32 panchayats in 2010.
In Avinissery grama panchayat, the BJP is just one seat short of a majority. In the 16 block panchayats, the LDF won 13 in place of seven last time.
The LDF swept the district panchayat by winning 20 out of 29 seats. In 2010, the LDF had won only 12 seats.
