KOCHI: An upbeat UDF camp has started discussions on the Mayor nominee. Despite some controversial statements of feuding Congress leaders, inviting the wrath of KPCC chief, a clear picture is yet to emerge.
Some of the prominent names doing the rounds are Grace Babu Jacob of the ‘I’ group (Ernakulam North), Soumini Jain of ‘A’ group (Elamkulam) and Gracy Joseph, a nominee of Prof K.V. Thomas, who won from Kathrikadavu.
While finalising the name, the party has to ensure communal balance. KPCC general secretary N. Venugopal has earlier said it would be a Latin Catholic, which brightens chances of Ms Jacob and Ms Josep.
Mr Venugopal is intensely campaigning for Ms Babu while former mayor Tony Chammany supports Ms Jain.
If the mayoral post is for LC, the deputy mayor will be a non-Christian and the grapevine is the IUML could stake a claim. Some believe Prof Thomas could also back Sherly Mathew (Fort Kochi) for Mayor.
KPCC will meet on November 11 to finalise its nominees before the swearing-in of new members the next day. Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor is scheduled for November 18.
