Chinmaya teachers fight for fair wages

The teachers have now decided to go on an indefinite strike demanding basic pay

KOZHIKODE: Teachers of Chinmaya Mission School are still fighting for the basic salary, despite a High Court of 2012 to CBSE/ICSE boards to ensure a minimum pay of Rs 10,000.

On Friday, the management denied physical education teacher Jaison Joseph his October payment and sought his resignation instead.

The teachers have now decided to go on an indefinite strike demanding basic pay and an explanation for the denial.

The court had ordered a minimum salary of Rs 10,000 to primary and middle school, Rs 15,000 for secondary and Rs 20,000 for senior secondary teachers.

Headmasters/principals of all unaided schools in the state should be paid extra.

“The management’s stand is illegal,” Mr Joseph said. “Until I get an explanation for denying salary, we will continue striking.”

The teachers also allege that Mr Joseph was locked up for raising voice against the “unethical practices”.

For more than a year, they were fighting, and they say there are many who work for years on a meagre payment.
