‘Medal wapsi’ puts OROP on fast track
The government cited the model code of conduct in effect for the Bihar elections as the reason for the delay
New Delhi: As angry veterans, annoyed over the government’s delay in issuing the official notification for the ‘One Rank One Pension’ scheme, threatened they would start returning their medals across the country starting November 9, defence minister Manohar Parrikar promised it will be “issued before Diwali”, that falls on November 11.
The government had on September 5 announced that it would implement the OROP scheme for veterans, but an official notification was awaited. The government cited the model code of conduct in effect for the Bihar elections as the reason for the delay.
“Centre delayed the notification under the pretext the model code... We fear that the notification will not fulfil our demand for which we protested,” said Group Captain V.K. Gandhi (Retd), general secretary of the Indian Ex-servicemen’s Movement.
