Four steps to take care of your fertility
Increasing stress and unhealthy lifestyles have taken their toll on women’s lives and also contribute towards triggering menopause early on in life. This has led to many women undergoing fertility treatments even when they in their late 20s. At the same time, career concerns are another factor why women are delaying motherhood today. According to an article by Healthista, these are five sure-shot ways to preserve your fertility.
1) Safeguard yourself from STDs
According to research, a quarter of all fertility problems are caused as side-effects of STDs. For instance, Chlamydia can go undetected with no symptoms at all and yet end up blocking fallopian tubes if not diagnosed and treated at an earlier stage. The best way to keep yourself safe is to have protected sex and regularly get screening tests done.
2) Quit smoking
Alarmingly, 13 percent of the world’s infertility is caused by smoking, which can even age you by ten years in fertility terms. At the same time, smokers are 30 percent less fertile than non-smokers and three times more likely to take an extra year to get pregnant. Also, smokers approach menopause on an average three years earlier than non-smokers and have lower fertilisation rates in IVF.
3) Avoid alcohol:
Binge drinking is associated with menstrual irregularities and gynaecological conditions. Additionally, drinking during pregnancies can harm your baby so it is advisable to start avoiding it right now.
4) Eat a balanced diet
Being underweight and/or overweight can impact your fertility negatively. Hence, you should try to avoid processed foods and sugar as much as you can. Eat plenty of different vegetables, fruits, pulses and fish to ensure a healthy body weight.
