‘We can’t provide Mahatma Gandhi prison’s iron rods for trophy’

Yerwada jail rejects BCCI's request to design Freedom Trophy with the artefact

Mumbai: Pune's Yerwada jail authorities will not honour the request made by the Indian cricket board to provide two iron rods of the cell where late Mahatma Gandhi was lodged.

The BCCI wanted the Freedom Trophy be made with the rods of the prison cells where the freedom fighters – Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela – were kept in India and South Africa.

The ongoing Test series is played in the memory of these two greats.

"We won't be able to approve this request as the cell where Gandhi was kept is declared as "heritage" and the rods of the heritage cannot be removed", said the jail official BK Upadhyay.

"The heritage cell is inside the prison where no tourist is allowed. Even the Yerwada prisoners are not allowed,” he added.

“We are yet to reply to the Indian cricket board but the decision will be announced to them,” he further added.
