Thiruvananthapuram Corporation drive nets 22 stray dogs

The civic body is also planning to conduct a walk-in interview to hire two veterinary surgeons on contract for mass sterilisation
Thiruvananthapuram: A day after the HC directing local bodies to take necessary steps to control stray dogs, the city corporation here has launched a sterilisation drive.
The civic authorities caught 22 stray dogs from various part of the city on Thursday and sheltered them at Pettah Veterinary Hospital for observation.
“Majority of them are diseased or wounded. We are keeping them under observation to decide which all should be sterilised or subjected to euthanasia,” said an official.
The civic body is also planning to conduct a walk-in interview to hire two veterinary surgeons on contract for mass sterilisation.
“We have decided to renovate the pound at Thiruvallam Veterinary Hospital. More cages would be set up and we have also invited participation from interested NGOs to be part of the drive,” said the official.
NGOs supporting the mass sterilisation drive would be given financial aid with the help of district tourism promotion council (DTPC).
“The HC has strictly directed Animal Welfare Board of India to provide all support. The AWBI is supposed to fund fifty percent of the expenses of the drive,” said the official.said the official.
