Kollam result to reflect RSP impact
The Kollam corporation that witnessed many political dramas during the choice of a mayor recorded 68.95% poll
KOLLAM: With just a day remaining for the election results to be out, both UDF and LDF leaders are busy taking stock of the voting trends while the district marked a record turnout of voters. Impact of BJP-SNDP alliance, RSP deserting LDF, and KC (B) supporting LDF are some of the crucial factors that may determine the poll outcome.
The district recorded a polling of 77.42% against the 2010’s polling of 73.58, obviously hinting a tight competition for both the fronts. Meanwhile, the BJP candidates and SNDP candidates who contested in the polls with mutual support are also expected to perform well as assessed by the record rate of polling in the district. A higher rate of polling was experienced in grama panchayats than in urban areas.
The Kollam corporation that witnessed many political dramas during the choice of a mayor recorded 68.95% poll. Out of a 55 member council, it was the vote of the PDP candidate that turned crucial as both the fronts shared 27 seats each during the mayor election last term.
The Congress party is facing threats from rebels emerged out of disparity in seat sharing due to factionalism. Meanwhile, the LDF takes an opportunity to tap the Nair community votes with its support by the Kerala Congress (B).
The front is also expected to fill the voids created by RSP by its selective fielding of candidates who can cash in on the “ideological defects” in RSP’s association with the UDF.
Karunagappally municipality recorded the highest polling of 81.77% while the newly formed Kottarakkara municipality had the least polling of 72.48. Both the Paravoor and Punaloor recorded 76% polling.
