Clock ticks on KM Mani’s fate
Future of FM chief debate at KPCC meet on November 11, 12
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Pressure is mounting on finance minister K.M. Mani to quit to save the UDF and the government from further embarrassment. A section of Congress men does not want Mr Mani to cling on to power at the expense of the UDF. The KPCC office-bearers’ meeting on November 11 and the executive committee meeting the next day will discuss the issue.
While Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has been defending Mr Mani, home minister Ramesh Chennithala and KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran want him to go.
The KPCC leadership is in favour of the three senior leaders taking a decision instead of conducting talks in the party.
Mr Mani is hurt that he is being given a shoddy treatment in the Congr-ess. A senior Congress leader told DC that since the KC (M) is also in trouble over the Mani issue, he should step down from the cabinet.
“The CM and senior Congress leader A.K. Antony continue to say, ‘we will work unitedly.’ But the UDF government has nothing to lose if Mani quits. It will only help the UDF improve its image before the Assembly elections in May 2016,” said a KPCC general secretary.
“Mani thinks that it was due to his ‘tainted image’ that the UDF government is marching ahead. Mani should be thankful to Chandy that the voters still support the UDF,” said a KPCC spokesperson.
KPCC vice-president Laly Vincent said the leadership was concerned about the Vigilance court verdict against Mr Mani. “The PCC president has already indicated that the KPCC would discuss the issue,” she said.
