Almost 80 per cent polling in Alappuzha

Alappuzha: The district recorded almost 80 percent polling in almost all its 2,252 booths for the three-tier local body elections on Thursday. No untoward incidents or delay in polling took place were reported.
Opposition leader VS Achuthandandan, after exercising his franchise at Punnapra north Panchayat, claimed a thumping majority for Left Democratic Front while Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala also cast his vote at Government UPS, Thripperunthura near Chennithala, asserting spectacular victory for United Democratic Front.
However, large queues of voters were seen right from the beginning in all polling booths. In fact, many stations saw lines of voters with slips after deadline as well. An increase in polling percentage in the district has become cause of worry for major fronts.
Areas like Cherthala, Chengannur and Mavelikara had witnessed active campaigns from the SNDP Yogam- BJP combine.
According to the electoral officer, as many as 2,350 electronic voting machines (EVMs) had been used for grama panchayats and 500 for municipalities.
