Women’s dress no reason for harassment, say cops
Wearing certain kinds of clothes leads to sexual harassment is a myth, website appolice.gov.in stated in a column
Vijayawada: Clothes are not the culprits. While perceptions are that certain kinds of clothes worn by women lead to sexual harassment, this is just a myth, the Andhra Pradesh police has asserted.
Fact is, women are vulnerable to harassment irrespective of their age and style of wearing clothes, the state police said on its web site.
“Wearing certain kinds of clothes leads to sexual harassment is a myth. Several studies done around the world show that women of all ages and wearing all kinds of clothes are vulnerable to harassment,” the website appolice.gov.in stated in a column, 'Myths associated with harassment against women in public places.'
It said, “A study done by NIPPCID for Delhi Police showed that 82 per cent of the women who were part of the survey were wearing everyday, non-provocative clothes like Salwar Kameez, Trouser Top, Sari when they were harassed.”
The observation comes in the context of arguments in social media, TV debates and elsewhere that certain ways of dressing by women encouraged men to indulge in sexual harassment in public places. Another myth discussed in the column is of 'harassment being done only by some kinds of people'.
