Kochi: The anti-plastic campaign at Sabarimala got a boost this time with the Forest Department too chipping in a major way. Devotees trekking through traditional forest routes like Erumeli-Pamba and Uppupara-Pandithavalam would be subjected to random frisking by the forest officials for plastic carry bags. Instead, they would be provided with eco-friendly jute or cotton bags.
"We've reached an understanding with the 'Kudumbashree Mission' to supply eco-friendly carry bags. The cost would be met through sponsorships. A formal pact will be signed next week," said Shantry Tom, Range Forest Officer, Erumeli.
There would be a ban on plastic bottles and cooking inside forests. However, sufficient number of eateries by Eco Development Committees would be set up at selected locations along the forest paths. "Frequent inspections would be carried out at these shops to ensure food quality and monitor prices," the officer said.
Meanwhile, the Pathanamthitta district administration in association with the Travancore Devaswom Board will launch a website missiongreensabarimiala.com from November 16 with the aim to implement a better waste management system.
"Devotees can be part of the initiative by registering on the website. Daily, a total of 100 devotees can be part of the cleaning and awareness activities at Pampa and Sannidhanam. They can choose their date of convenience to offer the service through the website. Already, NGOs and NRI organisations have offered to extend sponsorship through the website," district collector S. Harikishore said.
