NSS gears up to bag award next year

President will present this year’s award to State technical education director on November 19
KOCHI: The National Service Scheme Cell of the state which has won the prestigious Indira Gandhi National award for the best university/directorate for three consecutive years is all set to bag the honour for next year too. The award instituted by the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports is for the best performance by any NSS cell in 29 states.
This year, the NSS cell at the directorate of technical education has won the award while in 2013-2014, the award was bagged by MG University. During 2012-2013 the honour was for Higher Secondary directorate.
President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee will present this year’s award to State technical education director on November 19. There are 200 NSS units in the state spr-ead across educational institutions with more than two lakh volunteers as members. The 200 units have been classified into 15 cells.
“It is a rare honour to get the Indira Gandhi National Award for the third consecutive year. No other state has received the award even for a second time,” said NSS State Liaison Officer. Dr. K. Prakash.
For the 2015-2016 year, a series of programmes focussing on safe farming and conservation of indigenous seeds are planned.
