Metro tunnelling cracks buildings in Balepet

A building developed a crack because of the Metro tunneling work deep under the area
Bengaluru: Panic prevailed at Balepet in Chickpet as a building developed a crack because of the Metro tunneling work deep under the area. Mr Sathya Narayan, who was staying in the building called Vishnu Prakash, was moved to safety. Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd officials said that four other people had already been moved out of the same building over the last one month and Mr Narayan was staying in the rear portion of the three-storeyed structure that had not been identified as dangerous.
“The panic was unnecessary. We have taken all the precautions. We have identified 35-40 buildings in the area and have moved out the occupants. The tunnel boring machine Kaveri had to be stopped as the building developed cracks,” said BMRCL general manager (finance) Vasanth Rao.
He said, “We have served evacuation notices to nearly 40 families. But Mr Ashwath Narayan’s house was not one of those. When cracks started appearing in the building on Wednesday, we shifted him. Before starting the Metro tunneling work under these areas, we had conducted a survey and identified the weak buildings. We will give compensation to these families for the number of days they stay out of their homes.”
At present, the tunnel boring machine is working under MLS Building , and the occupants of this building too have been evacuated, he said. “Most of the buildings in this locality are old and in dilapidated condition. Some of them don’t even have the foundation. We are taking all precautions while carrying out the work. Our officials have been conducting regular surveys and we will assess the situation on Thursday too.”
The Kaveri TBM has completed 522 metres of the 750 metre tunnel.
