Indian space scientists will celebrate the second anniversary of the launch of Mars Orbiter Mission
BENGALURU: Without any ballyhoo, Indian space scientists will celebrate the second anniversary of the launch of Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), but use the opportunity to release an exhaustive chronicle of the indigenous space programme, titled “Fishing hamlet to Red Planet,” here on Thursday.
The release of the voluminous book, too, would be witnessed by a select group of top space scientists followed by a technical review of the mission to the Red Planet by all those associated with it, Dr A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), told Deccan Chronicle. “MOM is doing fine, and all the systems are performing well. With plenty of fuel left onboard, the orbiter could continue to send data and pictures for many years,” he said.
He said research papers based on data beamed by MOM had made it to international journals like ‘Icarus’ and ‘Planetary and Space Science’, while several Indian researchers had responded to ISRO’s proposal to analyse information sent out by the orbiter. MOM, which entered its niche around Mars on Sept. 24, 2014, has sent home some interesting facts like the level at which dust storms take shape on Martian soil, and many pictures, he said.
