Maharashtra: 14 lose vision after cataract surgery, doctors suspended
Mumbai: In another case of medical negligence, 14 people in Maharashtra lost their eyesight after a cataract surgery at Washim civil district hospital.
According to reports, the state health department has suspended five employees, including an ophthalmic surgeon, medical superintendent and three ophthalmic officers, for negligence.
There were 23 patients who were transferred to the JJ Hospital in Mumbai last week to determine if their vision could be restored, of which only nine cases were successful.
Tests have revealed that eye swabs used at the hospital contained infectious bacteria and the infections were contracted due to unclean medical equipment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the contaminated surgical instruments could have caused bacterial infection.
