Erratic division of wards hits growth
Many wards cross stipulated 44K population
Hyderabad: The GHMC ward boundaries were redrawn with the purpose of ensuring that each ward has a maximum strength of 44,000 voters. Given the way the exercise was done, the purpose has not been achieved.
For instance, Division 130, Subashnagar, under the Quthbullapur Assembly constituency has 72,240 voters and Jeedimetla, Division 132, has 63,778, way in excess of the proposed strength. Development works in these over-populated wards will suffer as the '1 crore fund per annum given to the corporation will not be sufficient nor can additional projects be taken up.
Citing other instances, Quthbullapur TD MLA K.P. Vivekanand said: “Division 131 Quthbullapur has over 61,421 voters. There is a huge difference in terms of voter population after delimitation. All divisions have more than 44,000 voters. Gajularamaram division has 44,244 voters and Ranga Reddy Nagar division 127 has 52,024. ”
Congress former corporators staged a dharna at the GHMC commissioner’s office demanding revision of the delimitation of wards. The recent division has merged two districts. For instance, Begumpet falls under Hyderabad district, and Kukatpally is marked under Ranga Reddy district.
But a part of Kukatpally has been added the Begumpet division, which means the GHMC officials have merged Hyderabad with Ranga Reddy district. Likewise Serillingampally falls under Medak district and a few parts have been merged with Ranga Reddy district.
There is no continuous process and delimitation has been done in a zig-zag manner, opposition leaders said. Unless there is a revision, elections should not be held, they added.
