23.79 lakh set to vote in Kochi today
Compared to the 2010 civic polls, there are 63,667 more voters this time
Kochi: As many as 23.79 lakh voters including 11, 67,670 men and 12, 11,417 women will exercise their franchise on Thursday in the elections to Kochi corporation, 13 municipalities and 82 panchayats in the district. The district also has 18 transgender voters. Compared to the 2010 civic polls, there are 63,667 more voters this time.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, district collector M.G. Rajamanickam said that elaborate arrangements were in place for the smooth conduct of the election.
It is for the first time that multi post electronic voting machines are being used in three tier panchayats which will facilitate easy counting of votes. For casting their votes, the voters have to produce any one of the eight photo identity documents.
Compared to previous elections, the number of women candidates has increased considerably, especially in grama panchayat and block panchayat levels. As many as 3,669 women candidates are in the fray in Erna-kulam while the number of male candidates is 3,692.
There are 2,052 wards in the district of which 74 are in the City Corporation, 429 in municipalities and 1,549 in three tier panchayats. Koothattu-kulam and Piravom are the newly formed municipalities with 28 and 32 wards each. Tripunithura has the highest number of wards, 49 while Aluva has the least with 26.
The authorities have readied 3, 83,871 ballot papers for the 3248 booths in the district. In Ernakulam, 131 booths have been identified as sensitive where additional police personnel will be deployed. Korunkotta and Thanthoni thuruth have been identified as the most inaccessible booths.
