Sensex extends fall by 147 points; Nifty breaches 8,000-mark
Mumbai: Key benchmark indices extended losses and hit fresh intra-day lows in late morning trade, with the BSE Sensex falling 147 points and the NSE Nifty breaching the psychological 8,000-level following sustained selling mainly in banking, realty, metal, capital goods and IT sectors.
The BSE Mid-Cap and Small-Cap indices were down 0.71 per cent and 0.73 per cent respectively. The 30-share index, Sensex, resumed marginally higher at 26,557.80, later slipped to a low of 26,373.48 before quoted at 26,405.88, at 1115 hours, showing a fall of 147.04 points, or 0.55 per cent, from its last close.
The NSE 50-share Nifty were also trading down at 44.50 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 7,995.70 at 1115 hours. Major losers were, Bharti Airtel 2.30 pct, Vedl 2.08 pct, Tata Steel 1.93 pct, SunPharma 1.84 pct, Axis Bank 1.82 pct, Tcs 1.16 pct and ICICI bank 1.15 pct.
However, HeroMotoco gained 1.59 pct, followed by Coal India 1.04 pct and NTPC 0.85 pct. Meanwhile, Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 33.16 crore yesterday as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges. At overseas market, Asian stocks were trading mixed while, US stocks dropped yesterday, as energy stocks turned lower on a drop in oil prices and Federal Reserve officials said US economic strength could justify a December interest rate hike.
