Human rights activist Ossie Fernandez dead
Chennai: Renowned human rights activist and environmentalist Ossie Fernandez (58) died at a corporate hospital in Chennai on Tuesday after a brief illness. Chennai-based Fernandez is the director of Human Rights Advocacy and Research Foundation and has been a strong advocate for child rights and custodial justice.
A regular lead participant in workshops and training programs, Fernandez had also been part of fact finding research works related to human rights, fishermen issues and women’s right. He also worked closely with human right activist advocates and has been staunch whistle blower against human rights violations in Tamil Nadu.
According to sources close to Fernandez, the funeral is to be held on Wednesday. Fernandez is survived by his wife Halcyon and son Carl. “Ossie, along with advocate Mohan conducted a memorable training on Coastal Regulation Zone Notification in 1991. I left the workshop in admiration of his perspicacity and clarity of thought,” said environmentalist Nithyanand Jayaraman. He is a simple person and fought all his life for ethical issues and great comrade, he said.
