Farook College protests spill over to street
The organizers of ‘Kiss of Love’ were seen in action along with the youngsters and social activists
KOZHIKODE: The students of Farook College and human rights activists took to the streets on Tuesday protesting against the gender discrimination practised by the college.
“Rescind the sex segregation in the 67-year-old college, which claims to be the most advanced co-educational institution for the Muslim minority,” was the major demand of the youngsters who gathered at Manachira square under the banner of ‘Tottochan and Kobayashi Master,’ the signature characters of liberal and positive education.
The organizers of ‘Kiss of Love’ were seen in action along with the youngsters and social activists.
The forum demanded withdrawal of the suspension of K. Dinu, first-year sociology student of the college, for sitting together with a few girls of the institution.
Dinu said that the college authorities had approached him to take transfer from the institution with a guarantee of good conduct certificate.
“If I reach a deal with the college on this, there is no meaning in fighting against the gender segregation issues in my institution. This is a symbolic fight and we want to show that no nuclear bomb will explode if a girl and boy sit together,” he added.
A few students said that building zones for boys and girls, separating space in canteen on gender basis and dividing open spaces had been happening in the institution and that protests were suppressed by suspension or dismissal.
Noted social activists and writers like K. Ajitha, Deedi Damodhar, Kanjanamala, K.R. Meera, K. Venu, Subash Chandran, Divya Nilambur and Sheeba Ameer expressed solidarity with the youngsters.
