Container ship wary of empty return trip from Beypore port

Authorities are making all efforts to ensure continuous shipments at least for six months
KOZHIKODE: Uncertainty over cargoes on the return trip is delaying the arrival of a container ship at the Beypore Port here.
Beypore was all set to receive its first vessel from Gujarat on October 25, but concerns over financial losses due to possible empty return trip delayed it.
“Talks are going on to clear the bottlenecks. We have identified a few commodities for Gujarat,” Beypore port officer Captain Ashwin Prathap K. said.
Commodities like coconut, copra, rubber and sunflower oil are under consideration.
“As we are a consumer state, it is not easy to get commodity from here,” he said. Courier service on ship was also mooted.
The authorities are working hard at receiving the first cargo early December and the state government has positively responded to bear the initial losses till the business gathers momentum.
A small ship-laden with 50 containers of tiles from Kandla port in Gujarat was expected to reach here in the maiden trip. Commodities like cement, fertilizers and wheat from Gujarat are also being finalised.
Authorities are making all efforts to ensure continuous shipments at least for six months. They hope to get 200 containers a month from two trips. A container will weigh between 25-28 tonne.
