Candidates unhappy with VM Sudheeran’s miserly ways

A Congress leader ridiculed Mr Sudheeran’s ‘false principles’ and said big money was needed for campaigning
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress candidates who have incurred huge expenditures for the poll campaign have hit out at KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran for his miserly attitude in releasing party funds to them. Mr Sudheeran’s stand that funds had to be raised from local resources had left most of them high and dry.
The State Election Commission had put a ceiling of Rs 60, 000 for corporation, Rs 30, 000 for district panchayat/municipality and Rs 10, 000 for grama panchayat candidates, but most of them spent between Rs 4 and Rs 15 lakh.
A candidate told DC that he had given between Rs 500 and Rs 1000 per day to the workers for squad work in one of the wards in Thiruvananthapuram corporation.
A Congress leader ridiculed Mr Sudheeran’s ‘false principles’ and said big money was needed for campaigning.
“Money cannot be replaced with anything else. For more effective campaign, more money is required,” he said.
A KPCC general secretary said he had to cough up '3.5 lakh from his pocket for the candidates as he has set his eyes on an Assembly seat from his district. But KPCC treasurer Johnson Abraham said the PCC had provided funds to all the Congress candidates within the guidelines set by the poll commission.
“Spoon-feeding is not prevalent in the Congress. The KPCC had asked the respective DCCs to collect funds from well-wishers. But not a single candidate’s campaign has been affected due to lack of funds”, he said.
