Basil Attipetty passes away

Basil, 56, was battling respiratory problems since he was hospitalised on Saturday morning
Kochi: Practising lawyer of Kerala High Court, Basil Attipetty, known for his prolific use of Public Interest Litigation to raise several human right issues, died here on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Basil, 56, was battling respiratory problems since he was hospitalised on Saturday morning. He suffered a minor attack at 3 a.m. and his condition worsened later in the day. He was pronounced dead at 12 noon. His funeral will be held at St George's Church, Nayarambalam.
Basil is survived by wife, Rosy Arackall and daughter Glitty, an MSC nursing student of Lourdes College of Nursing, Vazhakkala.
Basil took VRS from government service to practise at Kerala High Court and got enrolled as an advocate in 2011. Within a few years, Basil appeared in several public interest cases and got several favourable verdicts.
The High Court asked the state to set up night shelters for migrant labourers on a plea filed by Attipetty. The newly-imposed restriction making helmet mandatory for the pillion riders was also on his plea.
He intervened in several issues such as pedestrian crossing, food safety measures, Mullaperiyar issue. Milma was forced to shed the 'pure' tag from its covers after Basil moved the court.
Basil had moved the court against the stray dog menace and it is set to pronounce the verdict on Wednesday . Basil was a section officer at MG University and later Sanskrit University, Kalady.
