Chennai: Six juveniles held for breaking into shops

Accused, are all residents of Kannagi Nagar slum resettlement board houses

Chennai: City police on Monday arrested eight persons including six juveniles, for breaking into shops and a spate of burglaries, in and around Kannagi Nagar off Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

More than 15 mobile phones and 13 sovereigns of gold jewellery were recovered from them.

The accused, are all residents of Kannagi Nagar slum resettlement board houses. Thoraipakkam police launched a hunt for the suspects after the gang broke into a mobile shop at Mettukuppam near Thoraipakkam in October. CCTV footages recovered led the police to the gang as two of the juveniles were earlier arrested in theft cases in the same area, police said.

A team arrested Manikandan (19) and Chiranjeevi (19) of Kannagi Nagar who led them to the juveniles. “They were using an unoccupied flat in the slum clearance board settlement in Ezhil Nagar as their hideout,” a police officer said. The teenagers were remanded in judicial custody while the juveniles were sent to the government observation home for boys at Kellys, police said. The boys also broke into a garment store in Pallikaranai a few months ago.
