India, US discuss policy measures to deepen capital markets

New initiatives to mobilize private capital fund infrastructure were discussed

New Delhi: India and the United States on Wednesday discussed potential policy measures that could deepen the former's capital markets and drive greater investment by domestic and foreign investors in Asia's third largest economy.

"We discussed new initiatives to mobilize private capital to fund infrastructure, policies that can develop a deeper and more liquid corporate debt market, and instruments to help sub-sovereign governments raise financing for development, “a joint statement issued after the second US-India Investment Initiative meet said.

According to the statement, both countries also discussed potential avenues of technical collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the US Department of Treasury in developing deeper and more robust Indian capital markets.

"We look forward to continued engagement between India and the United States on economic issues at the sixth annual US-India Economic and Financial Partnership Dialogue in Washington, DC in 2016," it added.

Additional Secretary in Department of Economic Affairs Ajay Tyagi and US Department of Treasury's Assistant Secretary for International Finance Ramin Toloui participated in the meeting.
