60 will be in the GHMC limits
Hyderabad: Over 130 new bars are set to come up in Telangana, 60 of which will be in the GHMC limits. There is huge competition to set up bars in Telangana in response to the recent notification issued by the Excise department. Five applicants are competing for each bar in the GHMC limits while 40 applicants are competing for each bar in the districts.
The Excise department will conduct a draw of lots on November 6 to allot licenses to set up bars. Presently, there are 747 bars in TS and the government has decided to permit an additional 130 bars based on Census 2011.
The Excise department has received 2,130 applications for bars. Interestingly, over 80 applications were received for just two bars in Bhoopalapally in Warangal district. The rush for setting up bars is also huge in Ranga Reddy and Nalgonda districts, officials said.
While 30 applications were received from Ibrahimpatnam in RR district, there were 15 applications from Kodad in Nalgonda district. In GHMC limits, the government has decided to allot one bar for every 30,000 population. If the population exceeds 30,000, an additional bar will be allotted.
Meanwhile owners of bars and liquor shops are seeking an extension of timings by two hours to increase their sales as the government has significantly hiked the license fees this year. The government is yet to take a decision on this.
