Polling peaceful in district except for stray violence

KOZHIKODE: The district panchayat registered 77.64 percentage voting in the elections to local administrative bodies held on Monday as per primary calculations of the election officials.
The polling percentage at the corporation was 74.93 whereas in block panchayat, it was 81.1. The percentage may change after the final rounds of calculations, it was pointed out.
There were long queues in front of polling stations in the district from early morning. By 10.30, am 27 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise.
Noted personalities including political leaders and cultural figures voted early in the morning. Bishop Varghese Chakkalakkal of Kozhikode diocese cast his vote at the Malapparambu polling booth.
Thamarassery diocese Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil voted at Korangad HSS while BJP state president V. Muraleedharan cast his vote at Higher Secondary School, Karapparambu.
Minister of social justice and panchayats M. K. Muneer, Mullappalli Ramachandran MP, former mayor Thottathil Raveendran, UDF mayoral candidate P. M. Suresh Babu are the other dignitaries who cast votes in various polling booths in the city.
Apart from a few incidents of violence, the poll process was peaceful in the district. In a gruesome incident, Lal Kishore, leader of Janadhipathya Vedi, a mass organisation of the CPM rebels, was attacked allegedly by CPM workers. Lal Kishore had left the CPM in protest against the murder of RMP leader T. P. Chandrasekharan.
At Payyoli, sons of an elderly woman, workers of two political parties, clashed over their mother’s vote. Later, police removed the sons from the scene. At Ayanikkad polling booth, the election process was affected for 20 minutes due to technical snag in the electronic voting machine.
Police personnel were deployed goo strength in all sensitive booths and they maintained strict vigil.
