Kochi: Mary James, 42, a native of Ochanturuth in the Vypeen block, is well-known among the local people for her culinary skills as there is a huge demand for the home-made sweets prepared by her.
She is contesting as an LDF candidate in the Elamkunnapuzha grama panchayat and promises basic facilities like roads and drinking water in the UDF sitting seat.
“This is the first time I’m fighting an election. I entered the fray as an NCP candidate due to persistent requests of the women in the locality. I too wanted to take the initiative to bring development to the region and what better way than contesting the polls,” a beaming Mary said.
Cooking was her passion from childhood and she started selling home-made sweets five years ago as a source of additional income to the family. Soon her products found market in bakeries like ‘Best Bakery’ besides among numerous individuals.
“Now I get orders for nearly 4,000 to 6,000 products (mainly Unniappom) and have employed helpers to assist me. However, the biggest benefit is meeting of various sections of people and a desire to do something to society. I’m confident of putting up a good fight,” she said.
