LIFT brought one of the most innovative exhibitions to the city

Bengaluru: Fourteen environment sensors, seven cities across the world. The art-meets-technology project by LIFT brought one of the most innovative exhibitions to the city, in collaboration with Swissnex India. All the sensors were assembled by those, who were selected from across the seven cities to monitor data. Apart from Bengaluru, Boston, Geneva, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, Shanghai and Singapore were the other cities chosen for the project.
“The idea was to have the data converted into visual art and design," said Johann Recordon, Project Manager, LIFT. “It teaches you about your city and art uses the data to tell you a story. Another goal was to have the data online so that everybody can access and gain from it.”
The sensors were used to measure air quality, dust, light, sound, temperature and humidity. “It’s not the same as using an industry-grade sensor, of course,” said Recordon. “Still, it gives you a fairly good idea
of where your city stands on all these counts, in comparison with the rest.”
The pollution indicator, for instance, measures harmful gases like secondhand smoke and carbon monoxide, expressing their concentration in terms of voltage. The dust sensor measures the concentration of particulate matter above one micrometre in diameter.
Fourteen of the best projects were selected from over 60 entries sent in by artists from across the world. “They were allowed to decide what they wanted to look at, everybody has his or her own angle,” explained Recordon. “Some have used all the data, while others used specifics like pollution or dust to create their graphics.”
The exhibition, which stopped in Bengaluru for five days at the National Gallery of Modern Art, will continue its journey to the other cities. Reaching out to audiences was the bottom line and most of the work comprised DIY experiments that people could try for themselves.
