Kuvempu Varsity gets NSS award

The 28-yr-old institution wins honour for the first time
Bengaluru: The staff and students of Kuvempu University have been selected for Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme (IGNSS) award for the year 2014-15. The NSS unit of the university is on cloud nine as the 28-year-old university won the national award for the first time.
As many as five universities including Kuvempu were selected for national NSS award in various categories in the country. It is the only university in the State that has been chosen for the prestigious award. With this, the reputation of the university is likely to go high at the national-level. This would prove highly beneficial for the growth of the university in the long run.
The track record of the university in NSS activities has been good over the past several years. It had bagged the State level award in the year 2013-14. This had enhanced the confidence of NSS wing of the university and prompted it to submit a proposal to the university Screening Committee seeking national award. Considering the works done for the welfare of community through the camps, the panel has selected the University for the prestigious award.
However, Kerala Technological University bagged a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and Kuvempu University has to be satisfied with only the certificate of appreciation. The President of India will present the award on November 19 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. This is not the end of the road. The university can win the cash prize in the near future.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Kuvempu University NSS Co-ordinator Kundan Basavaraj said, “Around 450 universities had been divided into five zones namely east, north, south, west and middle. “As many as five universities including Kuvempu had been selected for Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme award. Among them, Kerala University won the cash prize in the award category and we have won the certificate of appreciation.”
