Helmetless mayor candidate courts row
MVD inspectors told DC that the violation could invite penalty as per section 129 of Motor Vehicles Act
Thrissur: Ms C.B. Geetha, daughter of Co-operation Minister C. N. Balakrishnan and a prospective mayoral candidate of the UDF in Thrissur Corporation, courted a controversy on Sunday by riding a two-wheeler without a helmet in the vehicle rally during her election campaign in Olari division here.
Ms Geethan and most of her supporters were seen wearing plastic caps with party colours as they rode the two-wheelers through the busy main road here.
When Deccan Chronicle showed the photograph of the rally to the MVD officials here, they said that it had not yet come to their notice.
A campaign manager pointed out that it was a common practice to wear such plastic caps with party colours during two-wheeler rallies and that Ms Geetha was not an exception.
Meanwhile, MVD inspectors told DC that the violation could invite penalty as per section 129 of Motor Vehicles Act.
“It is mandatory for the two-wheeler rider to wear a headgear with ISI mark and a proper chin strap. We normally slap Rs 100 fine for such violations,” they said.
In 2012, Mr Shaun George, son of Mr P.C. George, along with Youth Front leaders of Kerala Congress (M) were caught on camera riding two-wheelers without helmets in Kottayam during a political rally. After the media reported it, Mr Shaun came forward to pay the fine.
