Chennai: Police launch hunt for two persons for trying to rob ATM

The masked duo damaged the CCTV cameras in the facility before making their attempted break-in, police said

Chennai: Police have launched a hunt for two persons who made a futile attempt to break into an ATM near suburban Tambaram during the early hours of Monday. The masked duo damaged the CCTV cameras in the facility before making their attempted break-in, police said.

Around 3.30 am, two persons walked into the ICICI bank ATM on Old Grand Southern Trunk (GST) road near Peerkankaranai. “There is no security guard for the ATM, but it has other safety features such as alarm systems and CCTV cameras in place,” a police officer said.

After damaging the CCTV cameras, they tried to break open the cash dispensing machine using a crowbar when the alarms went off creating panic. “The route towards Irumbuliyur is also usually busy at all times. We suspect that they abandoned the place leaving behind the tools to avoid getting caught by the public,” the officer added.

Passerby alerted the police control room after which personnel from Peerkankaranai police station rushed to the scene. Fingerprints were lifted from the scene and sent to the state crime records bureau for verification, police said. Further investigations are on.
