Montry Manuel from Bengaluru, popularly known as “Thaalavattam Montry” was in Hyderabad with his huge baggage of “organic” musical instruments that create wonderful sounds which integrate into elements of electronic, rock, Indian and jazz music. If the termites could create a Didgeridoo — a musical instrument in Australia — PVC pipes have created similar sounds through Montry’s hands.
Water jugs of different sizes, the thunder-maker out of steel waste and paper roll, and an aerophone of customised tubes connected to different notes... all make wonderful sounds.
“The concept is all about objects from junk material which can make unique beautiful sounds,” says Montry, “My inspiration has been from the many ‘street artists’ abroad who retune such instruments to new sound. I do interactive sessions in the corporate world and for school kids. ‘Thaalavattam merchandise’ created out of junk can also be used in day to day life (pen holders, lamp shades, bags, tables, office space designs, ornamental junk art) are available for sale online.”
