Meanwhile, a joint team of officers from the CBI and the Delhi and Mumbai police left for Indonesia on Sunday to seek the deportation of Rajan, two days after the Indian government wrote a letter to the Jakarta authorities for his return to face trial in a series of criminal cases registered against him.

Rajan, who was nabbed at Bali airport on his arrival from Australia late last month, has been kept in a prison in Bali. The joint team left in the early hours for Jakarta, from where it will go to Bali. First secretary (consular) Sanjeev Kumar Agrawal at the Indian embassy in Jakarta met Rajan for half an hour on Sunday at the detention centre. This is the first time an Indian official has met him in prison.

The 55-year-old underworld don was arrested in Bali on the basis of an Interpol red-corner notice after a tipoff by the Australian authorities to the Indonesian police. Rajan is wanted in 68 cases filed in Mumbai and has a criminal record spanning over 35 years. The 68 cases include murder, extortion and attempt to murder. He was also booked under stringent laws like MCOCA, Tada and even Pota. There are also six cases registered by the Delhi police.

In the absence of an extradition treaty, India has already provided documents to the Indonesians about his Indian identity to facilitate his deportation.
