Spare animals this Diwali: Peta
Animal lovers use #noscarenovember tag to spread awareness
Hyderabad: With Diwali around the corner, pet owners of Hyderabad are coming up with initiatives to promote a safe festival for everyone including birds and animals. Blue Cross of Hydera-bad, People for Animals, PETA and several animal rights organisations have started spreading awareness about not throwing crackers at animals and for a green Diwali.
In a similar initiative, “No Scare November” has been launched by Noah’s Army, an organisation founded to serve food, water and medical aid to stray animals. Their Facebook page states: “This November, let’s all vow to celebrate a cracker free, pollution free and safe Diwali for our furry friends! Make the right choice!” Sharing the #noscarenovember tag on any of the social platforms will thus mean that one is pledging not to burst any crackers.
Organisations are also trying to educate schools and colleges about toxic wastes and pollution caused by crackers. “We plan to go to schools to create awareness among children. It is always easier to mould them when they are kids. We will also be distributing flyers across corporate offices, restaurants, coffee shops etc.,” said Rahul Reddy, founder of Noah’s Army.
“Diwali is a time for celebration and joy. But it can be a very traumatic experience for animals, pets and strays as they are highly sensitive and allergic to the accompanying smoke,” reads a poster. As per data collated by Noah’s Army from various organisations, there are around 5.5 lakh pets in the city besides lakhs of strays. “Even if a half of the pet owners realise the gravity of the situation and stop making it a festival of noise, it will be a huge relief for the voiceless animals,” said Mr Reddy.
