Rs 2.51 crore, 83067 litres of illicit liquor seized in Bihar
Patna: Rs 2.51 crore unaccounted cash besides 83067 litres of illicit country-made and foreign liquor worth Rs 1.34 crore were seized from areas in nine Bihar districts going to the polls in fifth and final phase on November 5.
As part of its drive to curb misuse of money power in the ongoing state assembly poll, flying squad, static surveillance team and others have so far seized Rs 2.51 crore from the nine districts, Additional Chief Electoral Officer R Lakshmanan told reporters.
However, out of the seized Rs 2.51 crore, the income tax authorities have seized Rs 66.58 lakh after verifying, while Rs 1.17 crore was returned by the committees constituted at the district level, he said.
Authorities today seized 353 litres of illicit country-made and foreign liquor from different districts of the state, Lakshmanan said.
With regard to preparations of fifth and final phase of polling, he said that Chief Electoral Officer Ajay V Naya on Monday held a review meeting through video-conferencing with the district magistrates, superintendents of police and other officials. The district officials have been asked to take confidence building measures and deploy police and central para military force.
Out of 57 seats that would go to polls on November 5, polling would be held between 7 am to 5 pm on 55 seats, while polling in Mahishi and Simri Bakhtiyarpur seats in Saharsa district would be held between 7 am to 3 pm, Lakshmanan said.
He said 138 cases have been registered for defacement in public property, 42 for defacement of private property, 58 for misuse of Vehicle Act, eight for violation of Loudspeaker Act and two related to inducement/gratification to electors.
He said 116 arms and weapons and 583 cartridges have been seized, while 4974 licensed arms were deposited with the authorities and 1937 arms licences cancelled, he said.
A total 55,401 people were detained under preventive sections of Cr PC, 12,539 non-bailable warranted executed, he said adding Rs 2.76 crore have been collected as fine during vehicle checking.
