Commandos to keep eye on Wayanad polls
KOZHIKODE: Thunderbolt commandos and special striking force under the control of DIG north zone Dinendra Kashyap who is heading the anti-Maoist operations in the state, started combing operations on Sunday in the deep jungle and fringe forests in many regions under Maoist threat in the border zones of Kannur and Wayanad districts, according to police sources.
In Wayanad, total 26 booths are under the surveillance of the anti- Maoist squad which comprises 400 thunderbolt commandos, one company of Karnataka police with special training in anti-Maoist operations, personnel from India Reserve Battalion (IRB) and the Anti-Naxal squad, sources said. The combing operations will continue till Monday evening.
In Wayanad three booths, Makkimala, Kunjome and Tirunelli, are considered more prone to Maoist threat.
It is to be recalled that Maoist literature, attacks and visits of cadres to tribal settlements were frequent in these regions surrounded by jungle. In Kannur district, many booths in the hilly region of Kelakam and Kottiyoor are under special surveillance.
Though there is no specific police intelligence input indicating a possible threat, the security forces are on a ‘no stones unturned’ mission in the booths and surrounding areas of red-listed zones of Wayanad district.
