CID identifies body found in Khanapur

The deceased was killed by kin for terrorising them
Belagavi: Within three days of recovering an unidentified body in Khanapur forest, which resembled the sketch of alleged killer of Dr M.M. Kalburgi, a special team of CID has been able to crack the case. On Sunday, the team, headed by DIG Hemant Nimbalkar, disclosed that the deceased has been identified as Mahahtesh Chidanand Shiroli, a resident of Kadapur, Chikkodi taluk.
Shiroli, a habitual offender with several cases in various police stations including Pune, Mumbai and Kolhapur, was allegedly attacking and terrorising his family members. He was shot down by his brother and three others in Khanapur forest after his harassment became unbearable for the family. The police confirmed that Shiroli’s murder was not linked to that of Dr Kalburgi’s killing and that the former was killed by his family members.
The police department was going slow on Shirole case ever since the body was recovered by them on October 18. However they went into a tizzy when newspapers flashed stories about Shirole’s face resembling the sketch of Dr Kalburgi’s suspected killer on October 28. The CID team took over the case on October 29 and visited the spot where the dead body was recovered.
Based on available evidence, the CID teams gathered information from several police stations and jails in neighbouring Maharashtra, Goa and other areas in Belagavi region in an attempt to trace the killers of Shirole for the last three days. Based on a specific information, the CID team interrogated Mallikarjun alias Mallappa Kotagi of Dasnal, Saudatti taluk on October 31 to ascertain the identity of the deceased. Shirole had spent two years in Pune’s Yerwada jail from 2013 to 2015.
As he was harassing his family members, his brother Nandakumar Chidanand Shirole, employed in a shipping company in Dubai, decided to kill Shirole with the help of his cousin Uday Shirole from Kadapur, Manjunath Hosur from Dasnal and Mallikarjun alias Mallappa Kotagi.
They persuaded Shirole to join them on a drive to Goa on October 17 in a car. From Kadapur, they took Shiroli to Khanapur and consumed alcohol and ensured that Shirole got drunk. After driving 7-8 km from Khanapur towards Goa, all of them got down to attend nature’s call. Nandakumar shot Shirole with a country pistol on his neck from behind.
The four rushed back home assuming that Shirole was dead. During the interrogation, Nandakumar informed the police that Shirole had resorted to murderous attacks on his uncle twice, besides beating up his mother. Shirole also tried to blast an LPG cylinder at their home with an intention to kill all his family members.
Nandakumar decided to quit his job in Dubai last month only after Shirole harassment became unbearable. To finish him off, Nandakumar bought a country pistol from a resident of Polpur, near Allahabad in UP for Rs 30,000 along with four cartridges. As a trial shot, Nandakumar used one cartridge in his village before keeping the pistol ready with three other cartridges to kill Shiroli. The police have seized the pistol, car and other gadgets used by the accused and arresting the four for murder.
