106 couples enroll for Shubharambha
It is a mass marriage organised by the district administration for couples
Mysuru: Shubharambha, a mass marriage organised by the district administration for couples from all communities irrespective of their financial status, is receiving an overwhelming response. Of the 106 couples who have come forward to participate in the mass marriage, 29 are children of farmers. One couple is from the Muslim community and as many as 17 couples are entering into inter-caste marriages on the occasion. The weddings are scheduled to be held at Srikanteswara Swamy Kalamandir in Nanjangud on November 8.
With the state witnessing drought and a series of farmer suicides, the initiative by the district administration is intended to help farmers. They plan to set a trend by bringing about a change in the mindset of farmers in order to encourage them to embrace simple weddings. This is because, costly weddings have been one of the major reasons for the distress and suicides by farmers.
As many as 40 couples who have applied are from the Scheduled Caste community, 20 from Scheduled Tribes, 15 couples belong to OBC category including Vokkaligas. 26 couples are from Mysuru taluk, 28 from HD Kote taluk, four from KR Nagar taluk. Among 14 couples from Nanjangud taluk, 11 couples are the children of farmers. Among nine couple from Hunsur taluk, three couples are farmers. From Periyapatna taluk 19 couples have come forward to join the marriage cermony, 10 couples are children of farmers.
Each couple will be given Maangalya, Belli Kaalungura (toe ring), Baasinga, garlands and one set of dresses each. While District Minister Mr V Srinivasprasad is giving his one month’s salary for the event, the family of Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Prakash is sponsoring a couple, Deputy Director of department of Kannada and Culture, Ms Nirmala Matpathi too is sponsoring a couple.
