There are no more melodies alive in Bollywood: Lesle Lewis
Composer talks about his new play and lack of melodies in Bollywood
Composer Lesle Lewis who soared the temperature high with ‘Colonial Cousins’ in 1996 believes that the golden era of the melodies is no more alive. In a quick chat with DC, Lesle talks about his latest composition for ‘Beauty And The Beast’ and reveals that the level of artistry has come down.
How did you get ‘Beauty And The Beast’?
Disney had approached me for this play. I want to thank them as they supported me a lot. I really enjoyed it. Since I don’t want anyone to experience the fake Disney experience hence I did the entire recording in Prague with a live orchestra. I did the whole midi mock around February-March and the director let me do whatever I wanted.
Why you are so picky to choose Bollywood projects?
I have never been against Bollywood music. I started Indi Pop very early with the western touch. Bollywood is all about new sound. Naushad Ji, R D Burman, Bappi Lahiri, Nadeem-Sharavan had new melodies but now it no more exists. I never chase the medium. I am a melody and a sound guy.
Do you think that pop culture will ever come back?
It will but it is in my studio. I made ‘Colonial Cousins’ which was very global and international. Hindi guy will love the melodies. I am reinventing my space in Bollywood.
How much has music scenario changed?
It has changed. Primary reason is that everyone can write but I feel the level of artistry and the benchmark has comedown.
What’s your take on actor’s who have started play backing?
Today, one doesn’t have to be as good as Lata Ji.
What is next for you in the composition space?
I am moving forward from Coke Studio. There has to be a change of space but not now.
