Mumbai: One of the best Indian players to have featured in the longer format of the game, Hyderabad-born VVS Laxman was arguably part of the finest batting line-up of all time and carved a niche for himself as an elegant player that saw strokeplay at its best.

Laxman, who turned 41 on Sunday, was not a regular member of Team India but in 2001, he got his first big break against visitors Australia when he slammed a majestic 281 at Eden Gardens as India were following-on. His effort along with Rahul Dravid’s 180 set up India’s series win then.

Laxman’s success in Test cricket, most notably during 2000-01 when he averaged 53 in 115 Tests reflected in Team India’s Test rankings when they reached the numero uno spot then.

Laxman made his debut against South Africa in Ahmedabad in 1996, and went on to play 134 Tests for India. He scored 8.781 runs in the longest form of cricket at an average close to 46, slamming 17 centuries and 56 half-centuries for India.

The right-handed stylish batsman played 86 one-day internationals for India. Laxman scored 2,338 runs in 86 ODIs, registering six centuries and 10 half-centuries. He played his final ODI against South Africa at Centurion in 2006, but played Test cricket for six more years. He retired from international cricket a week before the home series against New Zealand in 2012.
