Swami Saswathikananda death: New evidence demands fresh probe

Reinvestigation into Swami death ordered as Biju Ramesh hands over names of those present when suspect confessed

Kochi: The home department ordered a further investigation into the unnatural death of Swami Saswathikananda on the strength of bar owner Biju Ramesh’s statement recorded on Friday.

Top home department sources told Deccan Chronicle that Biju Ramesh deposed before the crime branch SP K. Madhu and gave new clues warranting a further probe. He also handed over the names of persons who can be identified later.

According to police, Biju Ramesh handed over the names of even the two jail wardens who were present when Priyan, the alleged killer, revealed that he had committed the crime. He also revealed the name of another person.

Biju Ramesh said he was willing to undergo a lie-detection test. Though the police had questioned both Priyan and Biju Ramesh in the earlier investigation, the CB had failed to get any result and it noted the actual reason for the death as asphyxia due to drowning.

The recent oral observation made by the High Court as well as the Aluva magistrate court order also paved the way for a further probe.

Still the Crime branch will have to answer several unanswered questions such as the need for a fresh FIR just like in the recent CPM leader M.M. Mani case. The police registered an FIR based on the fresh revelations and Mani was arrested and lodged in jail.
